Unlike typical membrane garments, Páramo's system, pioneered by Nick Brown, founder of Nikwax, is rooted in environmental consciousness. In the 1980s, Brown identified flaws in waterproof fabrics, particularly in the humid and cool climates of Britain. Concerned with the environmental impact of microplastics and harmful PFCs used in waterproofing, Brown vowed never to use such compounds in his products. This led to the development of Nikwax Analogy fabrics, and in 1992, Páramo Directional Clothing was founded to create garments based on these technologies.

The factory’s profits are reinvested in community projects, including housing, a canteen, and a nursery school, benefiting over 500 women annually.
