Hanwag has and continues to make a huge contribution to satisfying our customers who are looking for hiking, trekking and stalking footwear, which is suitable to extreme conditions and rough terrain in the field. With few UK stockists and a reputation that was still building, our first order was small, but the brand has since grown rapidly in demand, which has reflected in our range here at Allcocks, as we now cater for men and women in a variety of foot sizes and widths throughout the range. Each year as Hanwag stockists, we are keen to view what new products are available for upcoming season. A particular quality that Hanwag offers is a wide fitting option throughout many of the Hanwag boots. Hanwag wide boots have a standard heel section, but are wider around the forefoot and ball of the foot which many of our customers prefer to the standard fit. About Hanwag

Born in Vierkirchen, Bavaria in 1921, Hanwag came to life. With the Bavarian Alps as their playground, in the early 1930’s Hanwag produced their first leather ski boots, moving onto sport climbing shoes and paragliding boots in the 1980’s but still using Vierkirchen as a base for it’s design team. Hanwag selectively choose their suppliers and partners within Europe to use shorter transport routes and higher standards of environmental protection, keeping the CO2 emissions down. Hanwag boots are designed and built to last a lifetime, all materials are selected carefully with durability and quality in mind. Still to this day, Hanwag boots are manufactured in Vierkirchen, Bavaria with other production sites still within Europe, including Croatia.

Hanwag uses cemented construction and double stitching within their boots and shoes, defining their boots as robust, long-lasting and fully resoleable. Hanwag are one of very few manufacturers to be able to use this technique. The method is complex and time consuming as the hand-stitched upper is moulded and stretched over the last and attached to the insole to form a solid unit. The midsole and outsole are then glued and sealed with high pressure. This method of double stitching means each Hanwag boot has an upper that is secured by two strong, distinctive rows of stitching. Hanwag have mastered this method, making each pair last a lifetime, with a resoling service to give boots that have seen years of use, a new lease of life. Why buy a new pair of boots when you can have your current ones resoled?

In 2018 Hanwag introduced TubeTec technology into it’s hiking category. For the first time Hanwag is using a shock absorbing PU midsole. To make it suitable for maintaining outdoor use, a TPU ‘tube’ protects the softer cushioning PU sole from mechanical damage, also providing sustainability. The TubeTec eco sole is made up of 25% recycled material, including elements which are recycled from leftover material from the production of the Hanwag Alaska GTX soles. These leftover materials are broken down into small pieces and mixed with the PU and poured into the ‘tube’. This PU ‘tube’ is also made up of 5% recycled materials. This carefully designed TubeTec eco sole ensures perfect grip and traction. Very soft and cushioned PU midsole, long-lasting and hardwearing and reduced weight are a few advantages of this perfected sole.

Hanwag leather is natural and very versatile, is an unbeaten material for trekking footwear, and lasts a lifetime with the correct care. Hanwag use a selection of leathers within their footwear, including Nubuck leather, split leather lining, chrome free tanned leather or Terracare Zero; a completely CO2 neutral leather produced by the Heinen tannery in Germany. All of these types of leather have long traditional craftsmanship in common. Keeping sustainability in mind, all Hanwag leather is accomplished within the EU. Not only is leather an option for lining, but also the ever popular Gore Tex is also used within Hanwag boots to ensure warm and dry feet.

The Best Fit

The Hanwag fit is legend in itself. With nine decades of experience, expert craftsmanship, the best raw materials and perfected production techniques, Hanwag ensure a fit for every foot.

Hanwag use specialist lasts when making their footwear, and they believe this is the secret to the perfect fit. Usually in a factory, each boot or shoe is given its own specific form which is defined by the last. A last is like an artificial foot, it is commonly made from wood or plastic, the boot or shoe is then fashioned around this. No two foot is the same, so if the last does not identically correspond to the foot the shoe or boot can never perfectly fit.

Each model at Hanwag is specifically designed for a particular activity and is created using specially made and enhanced lasts, with dedicated men’s and women’s versions. Hanwag also offers special lasts for people whose feet and not a standard shape to ensure the perfect fit every time.

The Hanwag last range includes a regular fit last, specifically designed for each type of boot.

The wide fit last - Designed to eliminate pressure points at the side of the foot. The wide fit last has a standard heel section, but with a wider forefoot and ball of the foot.

The narrow fit last - Designed for male and female hikers and mountaineers who find the regular fit too wide. A closer fit offers better support and grip for narrow feet in rocky terrain.

The bunion fit last - Many people suffer from bunions (hallux valgus) and stiffness in the big toe joint. The special bunion fit offers additional room in the big toe area.

Straight fit trek last - The straight fit trek last has a generous toe box that allows the big toe to accept a straight position and provides a generous space for the toes. This benefits people who have a wider forefoot and enhances comfort and insulation for the feet.

Alpine wide fit last - Technical requirements have shown the Alpine model has a slightly more narrow shape, however the Alpine wide last provides a wider forefoot area. The pressure in the toe box is elevated to reduce risk of frostbite and allows rooms for thicker socks.

The Hanwag Tatra GTX

The Hanwag Tatra GTX is a particularly comfortable trekking boot with enhanced details and a very lightweight yet stable design. The Hanwag Tatra GTX boot is available in standard or wide fitting design. The wide fit provides 5mm extra width across the ball of the foot whilst retaining a close fit in the heel area to prevent heel lift which can lead to blisters.

Made from Nubuck leather with a waterproof breathable lining, ball bearing lacing system, separate protective toe and heel bumpers and a padded ankle cuff with vent holes. The sole unit is made by of a Vibram design unique to Hanwag. The Hanwag Tatra GTX is popular with those who are looking for a comfortable, durably and reliable boot to face hiking or trekking all year round.

The Hanwag Tatra Top GTX

The Hanwag Tatra Top GTX is a much-loved classic from the Hanwag Trekking collection and is made of more than 25 different materials and contains 110 individual parts, and needs 106 separate steps to make them. All Hanwag footwear is fitter with very high quality anatomically shaped heel counter, creating good ankle support.

The Hanwag Tatra Top GTX, is similar to the Hanwag Tatra GTX with extra features such as a high-top ankle support and a full protective rubber rand, suited to those who are taking on steep rocky terrain. The Hanwag Tatra Top GTX is popular with our customers who are stalking and need extra support in hilly areas, and an aggressive tread for grip.
