About Jack Murphy

Jack Murphy was born in 1922 and he was the son of a fish merchant in one of Dublin’s busy markets - Capel St. When Jack was 17 the second world war broke out, and three years later he joined the RAF, after suffering from a knee injury in 1945 he was flown back to Britain.

Jack married Frances in 1950, and they had five children. They then moved to the seaside village of Skerries, Co.Dublin, it was here that he launched his first business in the clothing industry. Jack has a small local factory, and it was here where the whole process took place, from designing the garments to packaging them up ready for delivery.

In years later, Jack Murphy’s second son Michael joined him in the ‘rag trade’ as he was keen to learn the trade. Michael began selling surplus army gear around Ireland with his business partner, while they were out on the road, they recognised a gap in the market for outdoor camping gear. They then set up a business together, which came to be known as Jack Murphy Clothing. In the 1980’s Jack Murphy Clothing began to thrive, selling outdoor clothing and camping gear. In the past 35 years, the company has expanded a lot, and still, the well-established country clothing brand produces garments that are designed in Ireland.

Today the company remains true to its values as a traditional family business supplying quality, stylish and functional clothing, all of these represent the man who inspired the brand, Jack Murphy. The managing director of Jack Murphy is his son, Michael Murphy. Recently, Michael’s daughter Sarah has joined the family tradition and is learning the ropes.
